Fourth and last tennis Grand Slam of the season, it is considered one of the oldest tennis tournaments in the world when it was known as the "United States National Championship" and where men's singles and doubles were played for the first time an August of 1881.
It was the union of two independent tournaments, the men's tournament and the women's tournament, which gave rise to the United States Open, later in 1900 the championship would be held national men's singles, tournaments were held in the East and West. Six years after men's singles began, women's singles began, in 1889 the women's national doubles championship and the mixed doubles national championship.
The Open Era began in 1968, when these five events joined together and allowed, for the first time in the history of the tournament, the registration of professionals.
The first to win in the Open Era was Arthur Ashe, which is why the main court of Flushing Meadows receives this name and in 2006 the complex where it is held, was renamed the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in homage to the multiple American champion Billie Jean King.
